A quick update on Notebook & Coffee how we are dealing with the corona virus

Quick update on Notebook & Coffee

I just wanted to let everybody know whats going on with our blog Notebook & Coffee and why it is so quiet on our end. We are all dealing with the lock down like everybody else does. So here is a quick update on Notebook & Coffee. At this moment we are trying to work around the clock to take care of our 2 children who are out of school during this period. Our 2 children are 11 year old autistic boy, and the other one a sweet but very demanding 7 year old girl and we are trying to both home-school them at the same time, as Jenny just recently got a little kitty it has been very busy ;).

As we are all going through this pandemic our lives are turned upside down, not being able to attend our church that we truly truly miss. We are all facing some challenges in our daily lives right now. As the schools are closed for the rest of this year in Mississippi we are having to home schooling them. With a lot of help of the teachers and some other people we are truly blessed being a part of this process.

Our daily life

We are a totally different household, my wife works at a orthodontist office and I am a stay at home dad taking care of our kids, and work / home schooling our two the kids, feed them, bath them, and do everything a mom does. Sometimes it is frustrating for me, because I feel as a man the responsibility for helping financially, which is not possible all the time as we are only have 1 car (for now). So my computer repair business is kinda put in the background. I have great respect for all the stay at home moms and the ones who run a blog. It isn’t as easy as people think.

It is challenging but at the same time extremely rewarding and its a blessing to work with our 2 children as they are both extremely smart. We recently bought a trampoline to wear them out and give them some physical exercises.

Our 11 year old autistic boy is doing extremely well, as we are still getting him fully potty trained, he goes to the potty all by himself and is wiping himself now. He is doing so much better. It takes a lot of discipline and repetition but it’s working. We are truly blessed and amazed on what kids can learn and how they are learning.

This corona virus lock down is a set back, but we have to work together to make things work, its a totally different way of life in a beautiful way. I get to spend time with the kids. On the down side I miss the time to blog and inspire other people.

But like everything else we will be keep going on and our lives will be turning back to normal. My 7 year old daughter truly misses her school and teacher and her class mates, which kind of makes me sad.

Our 11 year old autistic son has been improving a lot, (still has his little moments) but overall I see big improvements, in his writing and other skills. It takes a lot of patients and trying to keep him motivated to work. But he is basically teaching me. And he thought me that we have to think different in his way that makes sense to him.

Homeschooling our 2 babies

I wanted to show you all of what we have been using to home schooling our children and different activities that keeps our babies healthy, happy and still teach them and motive them.

Google Classroom    MobyMax

A year ago my girl got introduced to MobyMax during the spring break. My 7 year old girl truly loves it, they can earn stickers and game time after they finish their work i is also one of the most awarded program online. Another one they use right now is Google Classroom, personally it kinda lacks the fun part, but for me it works better when the work is printed out. It does misses the “fun part” MobyMax has to offer.

The most important thing for children is to keep it fun, don’t get frustrated when they make mistakes, making mistakes is a part of the learning process. Keep them motivated / excited and teach them in a fun way, this is how they learn the best way.

There is also great free open source educational  GCompris it has games and other educational activities, this app teaches your babies how to use a computer read the time and much much more! You can get it free from here its open source and is available for all platforms like Android, Windows, OSX and iOS. What my girl likes most is to do flash cards, learning her words this way is fun and exciting.

  • Computer discovery: keyboard, mouse, different mouse gestures.
  • Numeracy: table memory, enumeration, double entry table, mirror images.
  • Science: the canal lock, the water cycle, the submarine, electric simulations.
  • Geography: place the country on the map.
  • Games: chess, memory, connect 4, oware, sudoku.
  • Reading: reading practice.
  • Other: learn to tell time, puzzle of famous paintings, vector drawing, cartoon making.

Looking forward

This lock down will be temporarily as the temperatures go up and people get in the sun our immune systems will get stronger, so this virus will eventually go away, just like the flu does. We have to stay positive and pick our lives back up. We cannot let the feat get to us.

God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

As you can see there are many ways we can keep our babies entertained and educational at the same time. I know you have to do a lot around the house, but remember to keep your babies first.

I hope you all understand now what has been going on behind the scenes and I will be posting more updates on how things are and give you another quick update on Notebook & Coffee as we go
